LLM SEO: How to Get Your Business Mentioned by AI Assistants

    Brenda BenitezBy Brenda Benitez· Updated

AI search marketing in 2026 looks like a homeowner asking ChatGPT for a reliable remodeler in town. A patient asking Gemini which dermatologist treats adult acne or a business owner asks Perplexity which law firm handles commercial leases. In each case, the AI assistant gives a short answer and names a few businesses. That shift is exactly what LLM SEO is about.

LLM SEO is the work of making your business easy for those large language models to find, understand and mention accurately. It builds on traditional SEO rather than replacing it, because most AI assistants still lean on search indexes and public web pages to form their answers.

Nobody can guarantee an AI mention. What you can control is whether the models can read your site, whether your information is clear and consistent, and whether trusted sources say good things about you.

If you want help putting this into practice, see my generative engine optimization services and free AI search audit. Keep reading for a how to guide about how to get mentioned by AI assistants.

    1. Know how AI assistants find information

AI assistants answer in two main ways. Some answers come from what the model learned during training. Others come from live retrieval, where the assistant searches the web, reads a handful of pages and summarizes them, often with citations.

Live retrieval is where local businesses have the most influence. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews all pull from current web pages. If your pages are crawlable, clear and trusted, they can be part of the answer.

That is why LLM SEO starts with the same foundation as good SEO: indexable pages, accurate business details and content that answers real questions.

    2. Make sure AI crawlers can read your site

Check your robots.txt file. Some sites block AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended without knowing it, often through a security plugin or hosting default.

Decide on purpose, not by accident. Blocking training crawlers is a valid choice. Blocking the search crawlers that power live answers usually means your business cannot be cited in those answers.

Also make sure key content appears in the page HTML, not only after JavaScript runs or inside images and PDFs. Many crawlers read text, not pictures of text.

    3. Write pages that answer one question clearly

Language models summarize. They prefer pages where the answer is easy to lift: a direct sentence near the top, followed by detail, examples and limits.

Give each service its own page. A page called "Kitchen remodeling in Katy" with a clear description of the work, process, timeline and service area is far easier for an AI assistant to use than a generic "Services" page that lists everything.

Add short FAQ sections that use the words clients actually say. "How long does a bathroom remodel take?" is a better heading than "Our Process Philosophy."

    4. Keep your business facts consistent everywhere

AI assistants cross check. If your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB and industry directories show different names, phone numbers or service areas, the model has less confidence in any of them.

Pick one version of your business details and use it everywhere. Add structured data such as LocalBusiness or a more specific type, so machines can read your name, address, hours and services without guessing.

    5. Earn mentions from sources AI assistants trust

When an assistant recommends businesses, it often relies on third party pages: local news, best of lists, professional associations, review platforms and community sites.

Your reputation off your site matters as much as your site. Reviews that describe specific services, features in local publications, speaking engagements and association memberships all give models more reasons to mention you.

    6. Measure what AI assistants actually say

Ask the major assistants the questions your clients ask, in your city, and record which businesses appear and which sources are cited. Repeat monthly, since answers change.

In Google Analytics, watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. The visits may be small at first, but they tend to be people who already have a shortlist.
