The Local SEO Checklist for Service Businesses
Most local businesses do not have an SEO problem so much as a foundations problem. The map pack rewards businesses that are complete, consistent, active, and well-reviewed. This local SEO checklist is the one I work through, in priority order.
If you want help putting this into practice, see my local SEO services in Houston.
1. Google Business Profile
Claim and verify the profile. Choose the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories for your other services.
Fill in every field: service areas, hours including holiday hours, appointment links, attributes, and a description written for humans.
Add each service individually with its own description. Post photos regularly, real ones from real jobs, not stock.
Use Google Posts monthly at minimum. An active profile outranks a dormant one in close matchups.
2. Reviews
Volume, recency, and rating all matter, and so do the words in the reviews. A review that mentions the specific service and city helps you for exactly that search.
Build a simple, consistent ask into your process, after the job closes, while the customer is happy. Respond to every review, positive and negative, in a professional voice.
3. Service pages that stand on their own
One page per service, not one page listing twelve services. Each page should cover what the service is, who it is for, what the process looks like, what it typically involves, and what happens next.
If you serve multiple cities, build genuine location pages with local detail, projects, permits, neighborhoods served, local team. Thin duplicated city pages with the name swapped out do more harm than good.
4. Technical basics
Fast loading on mobile, since most local searches happen on a phone. Clear phone number and call button on every page. HTTPS. A real, indexable sitemap. LocalBusiness structured data with matching NAP details.
Fix the boring things: broken links, missing page titles, duplicate content, pages blocked by accident.
5. Citations and consistency
Your business name, address, and phone number must match exactly across your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, industry directories, and any association listings.
Old addresses and disconnected numbers floating around the web actively suppress local rankings. Clean them up once, properly.
6. Tracking that tells the truth
Call tracking, form tracking, and conversion goals connected to analytics. Without these you cannot tell which service, city, or channel is producing work.
Review monthly against one question: how many qualified inquiries did search produce, and what did each one cost?
